Real Wedding; Catherine and Ryan

11th May 2022/in Bride's Tip /by oldwall_admin01

Catherine and Ryan tied the knot at Oldwalls on 18th December 2021.

After postponing their wedding three times here’s what they had to say about their day…

How did you first meet?

Ryan and I went to the same school. I was 16 and he was 18, that’s when we first started going out with each other.

How did he propose?

It was my birthday and we’d not long had our son Dougie. We went to a log cabin in England for the week. At midnight on my birthday, while we were in the hot tub, he proposed, it was a total surprise!

Where did you get married?

Oldwalls Gower

What attracted you to the venue?

It’s so amazing! We’ve been to so many weddings so knew what we liked and didn’t like. When we came to Oldwalls, we just knew. We didn’t care how long we had to wait or how much it was going to cost; we just knew we wanted our wedding there.

The venue flowed perfectly. Other venues we’d been to there were different floors and rooms, but Oldwalls flowed nicely.

The service and staff were amazing too, as soon as we walked in, we felt like celebrities.

What was your wedding theme?

Ivory and black tie.

What stationary did you have?

We used a company called LUMI events and they did all our menus, table plans, order of the day, post box and table numbers.

We also had nut crackers, a sweet table, and confetti cones.

We hired a Tepee for the kids which had balloons and toys in there to keep them entertained.

What did you wear? Tell us about your gown…

I had two dresses and wore my 2nd dress for the wedding. I went off my first dress. With Covid and having a baby in between, I went back to my old figure and the dress didn’t fit me like it once did. I lost weight and I wanted to feel nice.

I went to Yasmin Rose in Cardiff and tried on a few dresses there.

My original dress was sparkly with lace, and my 2nd dress which I ended up wearing was plain with an over skirt, which I took off in the evening.

How did your dress make you feel?

I felt amazing!

I got to wear my mums fur jacket that she wore for her wedding with my dad in 1988 which was amazing and sentimental.

What did the groom wear and where were the suits from?

The suits were from Dyfed Menswear, and they all wore black tux

How did you feel when you first saw him at the altar?

I was emotional. Dougie our little boy was really ill on the day, and we didn’t know why. Turned out he had scarlet fever. He was so excited for the wedding too.

I was 45 minutes late as Dougie didn’t want to put his suit or shoes on and didn’t want to wait at the front with Ryan. He walked in between me and my dad down the aisle and stood between me and Ryan the whole time throughout the ceremony.

Ryan was stressed because I was so late, so it was very emotional when we finally saw each other.

Tell us about your bridesmaids, who were they?

I had 4 bridesmaids, all best friends and they wore short ivory dresses
What was your best memory of the ceremony?

It must be Dougie standing in between us the whole time throughout the ceremony. It was so funny, he wouldn’t move. He was even between us when we had our first kiss.

What was your first dance song?

Wherever you will go by The Calling

How did you entertain your guests?

Ryan’s friend and best man have a band called Cover up and they played in the wedding for us

What was the cake like?

We had four tiers with all different flavours. The cake was plain white, and we added some real flowers onto it.

The flavours we chose were white chocolate and raspberry, sticky toffee pudding, chocolate orange and lemon

How did you feel on the day?

Amazing. It goes so fast!

We had to reschedule our wedding three times due to covid. We were meant to get married in August 2020, then we moved it to December 2020, then finally we tied the knot in December 2021.

We were so lucky, we knew restrictions were coming back, but our wedding was just before they came back into play.

The weather was also amazing! It was cold, but it was so sunny.

What’s your recommendation to future couples getting married?

Enjoy every minute it as it really does go so fast.

I would have a videographer too. One of my favourite moments was watching it back. When you’re in the moment you forget some parts of the day like the speeches. It’s nice to watch it back and see all the little things you forget on the day.

Real Wedding: Meghann and Joseph

8th September 2021/in Bride's Tip /by oldwall_admin01

Few people propose on a Yacht, but for Joseph, he knew this was exactly the right moment and the right place to ask the question.

It seems Meghann agreed, and together, they chose to say ‘I do’ in front of friends, family and loved ones at Oldwalls.

Commemorating their love for one another with a beautiful ceremony, it was truly a special moment to have witnessed. With two dresses for the occasion, Meghann truly stole the show and their wedding day was certainly one to be remembered.

Images by Marc Smith Photography

How did you first meet?

Joe: Meg was 15/16 when I first met her, I was friends with her older brother, we used to play basketball together. Meg is 3 years younger than me. We always joke, that I was Meg’s first crush. We used to go on family holidays together to centre parks and everyone would take the mick. We were good friends, and then lost touch as we both went to Uni, met new people and about 5/6 years had passed.

In 2015 me and Megs brother got back in touch and naturally I started thinking about Meg. I then saw her on a night out randomly and we hit it off as if no time had passed. I then asked Megs brother if I could date his sister…

Meg: I was 15 when I first met Joe, I was completely obsessed with him. He was my first crush. When I bumped into him it was instant. We got back in touch on Facebook and 3 months later we moved in with each other. When you know, you just know.

How did he propose?

Joe: After a year of being together we went to Dubai on holiday to celebrate our anniversary. When we were out there, I charted a yacht from Dubai marina and hid her parents downstairs in the yacht.

I put an ‘out of order’ sign on the door so Meg didn’t go down there, if she knew her parents were in Dubai, she’d know something was up.

I pretended that I didn’t know where we were going, so we jumped into a taxi to the marina to ‘go for food’ and then we went onto the yacht. We had a few drinks and some photos by the Burge Al Arab and then sailed to Burj Khalifa where I popped the question. Megs parents came upstairs then.

Meg: I was winding him up saying let’s have a Titanic picture, and all I could hear was Jo saying ‘Meg, Meg, Meg turn around’. I had no idea at all, I just thought he was going OTT with the anniversary.

He’s setting the standard for our anniversaries…

Where did you get married?

Oldwalls Gower

What attracted you to the venue?

We were originally due to get married in Mexico. Covid meant our wedding was cancelled twice (abroad) so 3rd time lucky, we made the choice to get married at home.

We were due to fly out to Mexico on 27thMarch 2020, for our wedding in the April, but 2 weeks before, our flights got cancelled. We re-booked for 2021, and in August 2020 it got cancelled again. We just knew it wasn’t going to be ready for April 2021.

We originally saw Oldwalls at a wedding Fayre in Cardiff depot. We looked at it, and knew that Oldwalls was an exclusive venue and thought it would be out of our price range.

When my mum mentioned about looking at wedding venues at home, we started looking. My mum suggested going to Oldwalls as we’d seen the brochure and knew it looked absolutely stunning. Oldwalls has been established for so long, we didn’t imagine it would be so modern and up to date.

We had a meeting with our wedding consultant Claire, and it just had the wow factor. We were with Claire for over 2 ½ hours and we booked it there and then. We completely fell in love, the open plan, grounds, everything. It’s just amazing, and it’s constantly updating and improving to an amazing standard.

The service was amazing too. You felt special from the moment you walked through the doors. Even amongst covid, we felt really looked after. It really is the little things and attention to detail with them, even to offering you a drink as soon as you walk through the door. Every single time we visited the venue, you were made to feel welcome.

Our favourite part though was the food and wine tasting. What an experience. It was one of our favourite date nights. We sampled the wedding breakfast options and tasted all the wines.

Going from an aboard wedding to a home wedding, all throughout Covid, was stressful, but we had so much support. We were really overwhelmed at first having to speak to different vendors, but straight away Oldwalls gave us a pack, with information on local vendors and we discussed ideas and options with our wedding coordinator. Our coordinator really helped with the planning and the team was always on hand to support us.

What was your wedding theme?

Me and Joe are quite a soppy couple, we wanted the day to be intimate and romantic. We opted for a classic clean look, whites and greens.

Our originally colour scheme in Mexico was rose gold and blush pink, but we were heavily influenced by Oldwalls as they have a signature look. It’s so classy and lovely there.

What stationary did you have?

We went for white and gold, clear candelabras for the centrepiece and tall vases with white flowers and greenery.

For the wedding favours we had miniature mason jar filled with cocktails. The bar team at Oldwalls put these together for us, and they blew our heads off! They were really sweet but they were rocket fuel. It was great that they were so strong.

What did you wear? Tell us about your gown…

I had two dresses. Both from Eva Ashley.

My first dress I picked out 4 years ago and was intended for Mexico. I’ve always been obsessed with fish tail and I couldn’t change my mind from that.

When it came to the first wedding being cancelled, Eva Ashley opened an outlet store, so I convinced my mum to go and have a look to cheer us up. We just wanted to try on some dresses to feel that wow factor again… well, we ended up walking away with a 2nddress!

I loved both, they both had such different vibes, and again, the venue influenced the dress. Oldwalls is the type of venue that needs a dramatic dress. In turn this heavily influenced the suits, so we decided to go for black tie. Oldwalls is the perfect venue to carry a black tie wedding.

First dress was Eddy K Bridal

Second dress was Riki Dalal

How did your dress make you feel?

I felt amazing. For me I never thought I’d wear a princess dress – I wanted to make the most of my body type with fish tail.

I know it sounds like a cliché but I felt like a princess.

My second dress was much lighter in the evening, and allowed me to dance throughout the night. We ended up doing the dirty dancing lift!

What did the groom wear and where were the suits from?

We originally had Camel suits from Moss Bros in Cardiff which were meant for Mexico. When we saw Oldwalls we decided to go black tie. Joe wore a Mark Darcy Tux from Practical Tailor in Neath.

Joe: I bought my tux so I can keep it. I’d like to wear it again on our cruise in December.

How did you feel when you first saw him at the altar?

Meg: Very happy, I got really emotional. Me and my dad were both emotional, my dad was crying all day long. I was beaming when I saw him bottom of aisle. All that relief, we were finally here and it was happening after 4 years planning.

Joe: Everyone makes a big deal of the groom crying, but I’m not a cryer. Meg had a horse and carriage and I could see that through the crack in the door, I wasn’t nervous but I was really trying to hold it together. I kept pacing and fidgeting. I felt completely calm and tranquil, it just felt perfect, pure joy. It felt right.

Tell us about your bridesmaids, who were they?

My maid of honour was Elisha, and my bridesmaids were Kate, Charlotte, Hannah, Kirsty and Kimberly.

What was your best memory of the ceremony?

Meg: When we did our own vows, we did a mix of lovely dovey and funny ones as well such as ‘I promise to share pizza with each other’

We walked in to a thousand years, as we did wait a thousand years and walked out to walking in Memphis, it’s Jos favourite song.

What was your first dance song?

You are the reason by Calum Scott and Leona Lewis

How did you entertain your guests?

As our wedding was during the covid restriction, we didn’t have any evening entertainment. We were allowed a part time dance floor outside, which was located under the lake house.

(The lake house is situated in 50 acres of Gower gardens, overlooking a lake and the Gower countryside)

What was the cake like?

We designed the cake with Bella (@bespokebellacakes) she was fantastic, we sat down a week or two before the wedding, and saw 7 different pictures of cakes we liked from her Instagram page. We took bits from each design and created a 3/4 tier cake (One tier was a glass prism)

We wanted a plain cake so the pictures wouldn’t outdate, and kept to our theme of white and green.  We had a hoop around the cake covered in flowers and a gold trim around the edges of the cake.

Flavours were, carrots cake, million shortbread, and strawberries and cream.

We also ended up having welsh cakes as favours for our guests.

How did you feel on the day?

Nothing was too much, between Debbie, the venue manager looking after us, and every member of team there, we felt so special and our family felt the same.

Every time I forgot where I put my prosecco  the team were there with a fresh glass. I always had a drink in hand.

Debbie made sure we had our own plate of canapés even when they came out for the guests.

There was such attention to detail throughout the day. Nothing went wrong. We felt so so special, and so you should on your wedding day. Oldwalls did it so perfectly.

Even the next morning, at no point did we feel like we were being rushed out. We knew the team were cleaning but at no point did we feel we were in the way. We felt important and that was lovely.

What’s your recommendation to future couples getting married ?

Book Oldwalls!!

Trust the team and know that everything will be taken care of, even what you don’t think of.

If you’re going to visit Oldwalls, visit all of their venues – we didn’t plan on seeing Oldwalls, and we’re so so glad we did, just trust them.

The day was perfect, I know it’s a cliché but we get to spend the rest of our lives knowing we had the truly perfect day for our wedding.

Trust your team, when they say it’s going to be perfect, it’s going to be perfect.

The standard that everything is done to, from the rooms to their the Rustic Retreat cottages, there is such attention to detail. You really feel the luxury.

Congratulations Mr and Mrs Protheroe! Here are some more images from Meghann and Joe’s magical day…

Introducing Sant Ffraed House

9th July 2021/in Bride's Tip /by oldwall_admin01

News release by The Oldwalls Collection

Independent wedding venue owner/operators, The Oldwalls Collection, today signed a £3.5 million-pound deal to open a brand-new wedding venue. The wedding specialists have acquired former country house hotel and restaurant, Llansantffraed Court Hotel based in Abergavenny. The new owners plan to invest an additional £1.5m into the Grade 2 listed property and create over 50 jobs. Work on the major refurbishment and restoration of the property is already underway.

Managing Director, Andrew Hole Said: “Its no secret that the wedding and events industry has been one of the most badly disrupted. We have had to postpone over 500 weddings across the group during the past 18 months and some couples are on their third or fourth date! As we’ve prioritised the business on the books, we are extremely limited in terms of accommodating newly engaged couples, especially if they are looking for weekends in 2022 and so we sought a solution to provide more choice. Some may consider this a bad time for a hospitality business to expand, but as the economy and wedding industry bounces back we feel the timing has never been better. A wedding is a rite-of-passage and there is a pent-up demand due to couples not wishing to book during lockdown, abroad wedding plans disrupted and of course couples are getting engaged every day.  All quality venues across Wales are pretty much fully booked for the next two years – a new wedding venue is just what Wales needs! ”

(Sant Ffraed House by Oldwalls)

In keeping with the groups reputation to offer an unrivalled, exclusive wedding experience. Sant Ffraed House by Oldwalls will offer a reception and ceremony space for at least 150 guests, substantial on-site accommodation, two bars and an evening entertainment space, the property is set within 330 acres of historic estate with views of Sugar Loaf mountain, the high-end market town of Abergavenny is just a 10-minute drive away.

When in full operation, the groups current, all year around wedding venues attract up to 40,000 wedding guests per year to Gower.

Andrew Hole continues: “We are working with local councils, planners and consultants to ensure we inject our signature ‘Oldwalls magic’ not just into the property but into the area as well. Monmouthshire County is widely considered as the gateway to England and the property is perfectly positioned to attract couples and their guests from all over Wales and the rest of the U.K. The Severn Bridge or the M5 can be reached within 25 minutes.

We hope the local tourism attractions, restaurants, bars and hotels will also benefit from the secondary spend of our visitors.  We are committed to spending and employing local where possible and plan to build a brand-new team of at least 50 over the next 12 months. We know recruitment is going to be one of our toughest challenges given the resource shortage in the hospitality industry at the moment. Our aim will be to attract the best and develop new local talent by offering above and beyond hospitality standard wage and the promise of training.”

Established in 2008, by Swansea born brothers, Andrew and Simon Hole, The Oldwalls Collection, currently compromises of two of Wales’ most popular wedding venues, Oldwalls Gower and Fairyhill. The group also offers seven luxury holiday cottages. The new property will be renamed, Sant Ffraed House by Oldwalls and will accelerate the group’s property portfolio beyond £20million.

They brought you the Gower coast, now for the country, the group are planning to deliver the first wedding at Sant Ffraed House in Summer 2022. The venue is anticipated to be ready for viewings from August 2021.  From today you can save a date at the brand new venue, to find out more visit www.Oldwallscollection.com

When One Day Isn’t Enough

15th May 2021/in Bride's Tip /by oldwall_admin01

Weddings are the ultimate excuse to bring your family and friends back together again, for a celebration of love, unity and togetherness. If there’s one thing the past year has taught us all, it’s that quality time with your loved ones is the most precious gift of all.

For the first time in the history of the Oldwalls Collection we are offering a two day wedding experience, exclusively available on selected dates in 2022.

You can’t stop time, but you can make it last a little longer…

 Escape to Gower

A two day wedding experience provides you and your guests with the time to explore and appreciate the local area. Your wedding location was the UK’s First Designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, so relish the opportunity to transform your special day into an extended staycation! Wedding guests are often travelling from all over Wales, the U.K or even internationally and the incentive to truly immerse in your wedding celebrations will be welcomed.

Who says destination weddings had to be abroad, Gower certainly does give the South of France a run for its money.

As for those epic wedding photographs, we’ll let the pictures do the talking…

Make More Magical Memories

‘The best things in life are the people you love, the places you’ve been, and the memories you make along the way’

From the moment you wake up, to saying ‘I do’, to dancing the night away, your wedding day can be a magical whirlwind. Extending the celebrations allows you to make even more magical memories and truly saviour the special moments.

The American dream

We’ve all seen the film ‘Our best friend’s wedding’ and dreamt about that lavish rehearsal dinner.

The rehearsal dinner is a big trend in America, where they bring all their loved ones together the day before, for a fancy soiree. If you can picture yourself hosting a celebration of epic proportions think Charlotte off SATC vibes then we can make this happen. Or for those looking for a more relaxed affair, a casual arrival and BBQ might be more fitting.

Picture this… your guests arrive at the venue at their leisure and check into one of our luxurious suites.

Honeymoon suit Oldwalls

You all slip into your cocktail attire or casual gear to enjoy cocktails and canapes on the terrace. Spend quality time with your loved ones without the traditions and protocol of the big day getting in the way. You’ll especially want to make up for lost time, as following this crazy year its likely you haven’t spent quality time with your friends and family for a long time.

For the catering, choose a 7-course taster menu, a traditional three course meal,  a relaxed live cooking session with our chef on the terrace or a casual buffett/grazing table.  The choice is yours.

Relaxed background music or a live band will add to the atmosphere, we won’t stop you breaking out in song either if you wanted to go REAL Hollywood… did somebody say Karaoke?

Today’s The Day…

Imagine waking up on the morning of your wedding in your dream venue; You’ll even have time for a champagne bubble bath!

You and your wedding party can enjoy primping and pampering, your chosen hair and makeup suppliers will take care of your look whilst we’ll make sure you have whatever your heart desires, a fancy champagne breakfast, we got you. The setting of our luxurious rooms is also perfect for the photographer to capture those ‘getting ready shots’ too.

Whilst you and the squad get ready for the biggest day of your life, your guests can enjoy a hearty Welsh breakfast, take a stroll through our grounds and get ready for the main event.

Post Wedding Day…

The next morning, wake up in newly wedded bliss!

Enjoy our renowned traditional Welsh breakfast feast  on the terrace with your family and friends before taking a moment to escape, just the two of you and wander through our Gower gardens, before delving into a post wedding brunch.

Think grazing boards and BBQ, champagne bars, garden games and chilled acoustic vibes.

Choose your moment

Whether you choose a pre or post wedding celebration, our specialists will tailor your two day wedding experience and ensure it’s truly unforgettable, bringing your vision to life.

Bring your nearest and dearest back together again for the ultimate celebration of love.

You choose the moment, we’ll provide the magic…
